ABC/Randy HolmesMastodon just released their new album Emperor of Sand earlier this year, but there could be another one on the horizon.
Guitarist Brent Hinds posted a photo on his Instagram of an album cover featuring Mastodon’s name and the title Cold Dark Place. “New jamZ coming soon!” he writes in the caption.
Back in 2016, Hinds revealed in an interview with Guitar World that the then-unannounced Emperor of Sand was “shaping up to be a double album,” with one of them being a disc called Cold Dark Place, which Hinds recorded himself.
“It has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through,” Hinds said. “I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit.”
Hinds actually got engaged onstage during a Mastodon show in May, so presumably Cold Dark Place is about a different relationship.
Mastodon will kick off a North American headlining tour in continued support of Emperor of Sand — and perhaps Cold Dark Place — in September.
