Imagine Dragons maps a “departure” and “arrival” with new album, “Evolve”

ABC/Randy HolmesImagine Dragons‘ new album Evolve arrives today, two years after the band’s dark, conflicted sophomore effort, Smoke + Mirrors. As its title suggests, Evolve finds Dan Reynolds and company making changes to their sound.

“Sonically it’s a departure, lyrically it’s a departure,” Reynolds tells ABC Radio.

One thing Evolve isn’t is a Pokemon concept album. But Reynolds does feel it represents an “evolution of sorts” for Imagine Dragons. And while they are departing from their older sounds, that means the band is also arriving at something new.

“It’s a departure but arrival and it retains a lot of things,” says Reynolds. “So Evolve felt like the right title.”

Imagine Dragons will kick off a North American tour in support of Evolve September 26 in Phoenix, Arizona.
