ABC/Randy HolmesA few years ago, pop star Justin Bieber guested on The Ellen Degeneres Show while wearing a Metallica t-shirt. While this act angered many a metal fan, Metallica’s James Hetfield didn’t mind one bit.
“I remember when that whole ‘Justin Bieber wearing a Metallica T-shirt’ went viral, I thought ‘So what?'” Hetfield tells the New York Post.
Many fans criticized Bieber for presumably not being well-versed enough in Metallica and metal history to wear the shirt.
“If he doesn’t know the history of the band or whatever, it’s fine,” Hetfield says. “I wear lots of stuff and I have no idea of the history, I just like the logo.”
“People try to shock me sometimes and they’ll say, ‘My grandma headbangs to your music — and she’s 120!,’ or ‘I named my baby after you,'” he continues. “I’m like, ‘OK, cool.’ I’m not surprised that anyone likes Metallica.”
What Hetfield is trying to say is that “everyone is welcome” as a Metallica fan.
“From cradle to grave, we’ve got you covered!” he says.
Metallica is currently on a North American stadium tour in support of their new album, Hardwired…to Self-Destruct.
