Chino Moreno explains why Deftones turned down touring with Korn

ABC/Randy HolmesIn an interview with German website Metal Heads earlier this year, Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch said that he doesn’t think Deftones would want to tour with his band again, as they did very early on in their careers. Now, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is confirming Welch’s comments, revealing that he has turned down several offers to tour with Korn.

“It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours,” Moreno tells Metal Hammer. “I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us.”

“[Korn frontman] Jonathan Davis would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say,” Moreno adds. “I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends — but I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values [tour] with you and Limp Bizkit.'”

Moreno suggests that the reason he said no is because he didn’t want Deftones to be pigeonholed as a nu-metal band.

“The name of the genre was nu metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old,” he says. “And I didn’t want to be old with it.”

Deftones will be touring the U.K. this week alongside AFI, despite the fact that Moreno is currently recovering from a broken foot. They’ll return to the U.S. in June for a trek with Rise Against.
