The visual, which premiered on Billboard.com, starts off as a simple performance clip — until some digital effects invade the show to reflect The Stage‘s themes of artificial intelligence.
“The main idea was to get fans involved and make sure the kids knew this is a song full of energy first and foremost — ‘hey, this is a record we can wrap our heads around. It’s cool live stuff. It’s a rockin’ song,'” frontman M. Shadows tells Billboard of the video. “But at the same time, we wanted the technological hint in there, so as the video progresses you start seeing things glitching out and all of a sudden the world turns digital.”
Avenged Sevenfold surprise-released The Stage last October, and they wrapped up a European headlining tour in support of the album last month. The band used their own album-specific — and expensive — production for that tour, which they’ll have to put away when they open for Metallica this summer.
“Lars [Ulrich] called me a few times to talk about this, and I said, ‘Dude, we just spent, like, a million dollars on building our stage and now it’s gonna have to sit in storage?'” Shadows laughs. “But the more we thought about it, what rock bands besides AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica get to play stadiums in 2017?”
“So for me it’s one of those things where the positives outweigh the negatives so much,” he adds. “So why not be part of the biggest rock tour of the summer and make it awesome for the fans, and then we can do our thing later.”
Avenged Sevenfold plans to bring their full The Stage tour to North America next year.
